History
The Anthropological Survey of India has a rich history spanning over a century. Its roots trace back to 1902 when the Zoological and Anthropological Section was established under the Geological Survey of India.

- 1902: Zoological and Anthropological Section established under GSI
- 1916: Became Anthropological Section of Zoological Survey of India
- 1945: Established as independent Anthropological Survey of India
- 1948: Headquarters shifted from Banaras to Calcutta
Dr. Biraja Sankar Guha served as the first Director, with Verrier Elwin as Deputy Director. Since its establishment, AnSI has been at the forefront of anthropological research in India.
