The Anthropological Survey of India (AnSI) is a premier research organization under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. Established in 1945, it is the leading institution for anthropological research in India.
Headquartered in Kolkata with regional centres across India, AnSI conducts extensive field studies and research in various domains of anthropology, including bio-cultural, social-cultural, and linguistic aspects of the diverse communities of India.
History
The Anthropological Survey of India was established on 1st December, 1945 in Kolkata. It originated as a Zoological and Anthropological Section under the Geological Survey of India in 1902.
In 1916, it became the Anthropological Section of the Zoological Survey of India. Finally in 1945, it was accorded the status of an independent organization under the Department of Culture.
