 A Brief Resume of Singnificant Activities for the month of January 2012

Some researchers of Southern Regional Centre, Mysore are engaged for finalizing their respective report under the project ‘Traditional Knowledge Systems (TKS) (a) on ‘Intensive Tribal Studies : The Kani Tribe of Papanasam in Tamil Nadu’, (b) ‘Village Study of Malanad Region’ (c) ‘The Study of Narona Village Rann of Kutch’, (d) ‘Social Impact Assessment’, (e) ‘Intensive Community Study of the Kadar Tribe of Kerala and Tamil Nadu’ and some are engaged for analyzing the data on ‘DNA Polymorphism on Contemporary Indian Population’. Some researchers of Head Office, Kolkata and Eastern Regional Centre, Kolkata are engaged for fieldwork on the project ‘Anthropological Study of Rajarhat’ and documentation work on ‘Weaving at Shantipur’. One researcher from Port Blair is engaged in Beta-globin Gene Sequencing at the DNA Lab of Head Office, Kolkata under the project ‘Community Genetics and Health’. Some researchers at Western Regional Centre, Udaipur have completed fieldwork under the project ‘DNA Polymorphism’, some of them preparing the final report on ‘Nihali of Central India’, and analyzing the data under the project ‘Traditional Knowledge Systems (TKS)’


Other Activities :

The Survey deputed one senior officer to participate in the Platinum Jubilee Celebration of the St. Anthony’s H.S., Kadaplamattom, Kottayam on 26th January, 2012 and another officer to attend the first Advisory Committee Meeting of Ambedkar University held on 13.01.2012 at Ambedkar University, Delhi.

Republic Day was celebrated on 26th January, 2012 at all the centres of this Survey.  Cultural programme was also arranged at some of the Regional Centres.

A National Seminar on ‘Rural Reconstruction : Retrospect on Tagore’s Visions’  in commemoration of 150th Birth Anniversary of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore at Kolkata on 17th & 18th January, 2012.  The above seminar was inaugurated by Prof. K.K. Misra, Director, Anthropological Survey of India.  Prof. Amiya Kumar Bagchi, eminent political economist and Director, Institute of Development Studies, Kolkata delivered the key note address.  Fifteen eminent scholars from different disciplines including Tushar Kanjilal delivered talks on different aspects on the ideas of rural reconstruction propagated by Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore.  Two out of these fifteen speakers were from the Survey.  A special screening of a documentary film on ‘Rabindranath Tagore’ directed and produced by Shri Mujibar Rahaman  also took place as a part of the national seminar.

The Survey organised the Executive Committee Meeting on 17.01.2012 and another meeting in Kolkata from 19th to 24th January, 2012 to review the proposed 12th Five Year Plan and a realistic work-plan of the Survey under the chairmanship of the Deputy Director(C) of Head Office, Kolkata.

The Survey has sent two teams of researchers from its Head Office, Kolkata, one to extend necessary guidance to Dr. Ambedkar Community Development Centre for organising a programme on ‘Thalassaemia Awareness Camp and Screening Camp of Thalassaemia Carrier’ held on 20.01.2012 at Pathar Pratima of West Bengal and another to conduct visual documentation on ‘Kabigan’ on 9th, 13th & 14th January separately organised at Sodepur, Kolkata.

One officer from the North Eastern Regional Centre, Shillong delivered a memorial lecture on 11th January, 2012 in memory of founder and doyen of the subject Anthropology Late Dr. A. Das Gupta in Gurucharan College, Silchar, Assam.

The Central Regional Centre, Nagpur of this Survey organised a workshop on ‘Agasthyamalai Biosphere Reserve Study’ at Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala on 19.01.2012.

On behalf of the Director of this Survey, an officer was nominated to attend the General Body Meeting of Andaman Adim Janjati Vikas Samiti held at Port Blair on 09.01.2012 under the chairmanship of Hon’ble Lt. Governor, A&N Islands.

The Survey participated in the 36th International Kolkata Book Fair, 2012 by arranging a book stall for the purpose of display and selling of the Survey’s published books in the above fair organised by M/s. Publishers and Booksellers Guild, Guild House, Kolkata held from 25th January, 2012 to 5th February, 2012 at Salt Lake City, Kolkata.


The Survey organised the following exhibitions during the month of January, 2012 :

Organised exhibition on ‘Community Genetics and Health’ in the 99th Indian Science Congress – Pride of India Expo, 2012 held at KIIT University, Bubaneswar from 3rd to 7th January, 2012.

Organised exhibition on ‘Santal Life & Culture’ in the 22nd Science Exhibition held at Rishra of West Bengal from 6th to 16th January, 2012.
