Development Anthropology - Anthropological Survey of India

Development anthropology is scientific research with significant application within the development project cycle. Its objective is to enhance benefits and mitigate negative consequences for the communities involved in and affected by development efforts. From an anthropological perspective, development attempts to improve quality of life for people, building local capacity and encouraging local participation and decision making in development process.

Economists and other social scientists see development in terms of national growth in productivity of goods and services and income, along with standard indicators of improved health and education. They do this primarily at an aggregate level and do not emphasize local participation and decision making. In contrast, an anthropological approach to community development has a stress on cultural parameters.

Whether development anthropologists act as ‘research facilitators’, ‘micro level interventionists’ or ‘research evaluators’ or an ‘ advocacy role’, their holistic method of analysis supposedly guarantees appropriate consideration of all the relevant variables; while their knowledge and cultural sensitivity guarantee the social and cultural adequacy of projects, they collect primary and ‘emic’ data for planning and formulating policy.

Development anthropology must become a profession, not simply a discipline. This in turn will mean changing the way in which scholars and development administrators are trained and to be equipped with skills set relevant to development work. Many of the personnel working in developmental projects are incapacitated to function effectively in the absence of world view, socio-cultural life and needs of the local communities. The personnel also need to be trained in theoretical and practical aspects of development. In the light of the above, it is proposed to organize a training programme for 8 days to all those involved in varying areas of development work.
