 A Brief Resume of Singnificant Activities, January 2012 - Central Regional Center

Project - POI: Cultural Diversity: Man and Environment – Agasthyamalai Biosphere Reserve:

Central Regional Centre, Nagpur has organized a consultative workshop on the project “Man and Environment: Agasthyamalai Biosphere Reserve Study” at Palode, Thiruvannanthapuram in collaboration with Jawaharlal Nehru Tropical Botanical Garden and Research Institute on 19th January, 2012. The workshop was attended by Shri Raja Raja Varma, IFS, the Principal Chief Conservator of Forest, Kerala; Shri C S Yalakki, IFS, Addl. Principal Chief Conservator of Forest, Kerala and Shri R V Varma, Chairman, Kerala State Biodiversity Board and others. Shri K Ravi, Head of Office, Central Regional Centre, Nagpur has introduced the workshop on behalf of Prof. K K Mishra, Director, Anthropological Survey of India and Dr. Samit Ghosal, the Principal Investigator of the project has presented the concept and design of the study on Agasthyamalai Biosphere Reserve.

Participation of CRC in the 1st Science Expo

The Central Regional Centre (CRC) of the Anthropological Survey of India participated in the 1st Science Expo Organized by the Raman Science Centre, Nagpur held between 19th to 21st January 2012. The Three days event was conceptualized to bridge the gap between the science and society by bringing the Institutes of repute in and around Nagpur to showcase their research activities and contributions to society. As part of this awareness drive interactive lecture series from the participating institutes were organized. A total of 14 Institutes participated in the event and nine lectures were organized during this period. Eminent personalities from the fields of atomic energy, space exploration, environmental engineering, water resource management, and biotechnology gave lectures and interacted with the public on these days.

The theme chosen for this event by the CRC Nagpur was “Bio-Cultural Origin, Evolution and Variation of Mankind”. The Exhibits included posters, panels, artifacts including stone tools and museum specimen, DNA samples and interactive modules streaming through large LCD screens placed at either side of the 10’X30’ pavilion allocated. The panels were arranged to depict the bio-cultural progression of man in terms of anatomy and culture viz. Bipedalism, cranial morphology, brain size ; lithic cultures (Paleolithic to Neolithic); and subsistence ( hunting and food gathering of the vulnerable tribes to Agricultural communities). Concepts of Biological variation of mankind from the classical genetics and Genomic standpoint, with special emphasis on genetic diseases, were presented through posters and interactive modules (specially assembled as flash movies) through computer. A good number of Large Panels were especially prepared for this event ; depicting the ancient migration of homosapiens, based on Mitochondrial DNA studies, facts on DNA, Biological variation, Life styles of some tribal groups etc; which will form regular attraction in the CRC Museum. Information on the projects Undertaken and completed by Anthropological survey of India and its publications have been projected as a continuous stream on one LCD screen. Sri. J Sreenath Anthropologist (Phy) gave a lecture entitled “Tree of Life and Mankind” on 20th Jan2012 as part of the lecture series.

Project - Community Genetics and Health (Human Genetics Extension Programme: Scheme)

Thirty five DNA Samples (16 SS and 19 AS) were collected for inclusion into the DNA Bank. Poster and Flash Movie presentation were made as a means of awareness in the 1st Science Expo organized by the Raman Science Centre, Nagpur held between 19th to 21st January 2012.

People of India: Cultural Diversity – Traditional Knowledge Systems (Fishing Technology)

Principal Investigator of this project is engaged in writing the report on the theme ‘Fishing in Coastal Areas/ Regions’.

Zonal Anthropological Museum

During the period from 22/12/2011 to 21/01/2012, 5840 Visitors (3000 students from schools, 1000 from Colleges, General public 1800 & VIPs & Govt Officials 40) visited the Zonal Anthropological Museum. Documentation and Digitization of museum specimens are in progress. Arrangements for the screening of Tribal films were made for the school/college students, general public and VIPs & Govt. officials.

A photographer of this regional centre is on tour to Southern Regional Centre, Mysore from 7th December, 2011 for 45 days to bring all the negatives and documents to Head Office, Kolkata for digitization with regard to the project ‘Documentation and Dissemination’ .
